Business context

A specialty coffee cafe had built a loyal local following, but its only online presence was social media. New customers searching online couldn't find the menu, hours, or location in one place — and the brand story that set the cafe apart from chains wasn't communicated digitally at all.

The challenge

The cafe's social-media-only presence could not convey the full brand narrative, made it difficult for new customers to find practical information, and did not reflect the quality and intentionality of the in-store experience. There was no structured way to present the menu or communicate what made the cafe different.

  • The brand story — sourcing philosophy, brewing approach, and cafe identity — had no structured digital home
  • Essential visitor information like location, hours, and menu was scattered across social media posts and third-party listings
  • New customers could not understand what made the cafe different from chains before visiting
  • The menu could not be presented with the context and care it deserved — ingredients, origins, and preparation philosophy were lost
  • The team had no way to update menus or announce changes without creating new social media posts
How Undertide responded
Decision 01

Brand narrative structure

The website was organised around the cafe's story — from sourcing philosophy to brewing methodology to the atmosphere the team had built. Rather than a single 'about' page, brand identity was woven throughout the site so visitors absorbed it naturally as they browsed.

Decision 02

Menu presentation system

The menu was designed as more than a list of items. Each section provided context — the origin of key ingredients, the brewing approach, and what made each offering intentional. Visitors could understand the menu philosophy, not just the options.

Decision 03

Visitor essentials

Location, hours, and directions were structured for immediate accessibility — optimised for mobile visitors who were likely searching on the go. No scrolling through brand content to find when the cafe opens.

Decision 04

Visual gallery and CMS

A curated visual gallery showcased the cafe atmosphere and products, while the CMS backend allowed the team to update menus, hours, and gallery images independently — keeping the site current without developer involvement.

Under the hood

Designed on a CMS with structured content fields for menu items, gallery images, and location details. The cafe team can manage all content through an editorial interface — updating menus, adjusting hours, and refreshing gallery images without technical assistance.
