Gaming companion marketplace
Snapshot

A two-sided marketplace where players in Malaysia and Singapore book verified gaming companions for ranked play, coaching, or casual sessions. Undertide delivered it as one system across three surfaces — web, iOS and Android — together with the operator console that runs it.

Business context

The demand and the supply both already existed. What was missing was everything in between: a way to know the companion is who they say they are, a way for money to move without either side taking it on trust, and a way for two people who do not share a first language to actually play together. Kaki Gaming set out to take a transaction that lived in private chats and give it a platform — and to do it on web and both app stores at once, because this audience does not sit at a desk.

The challenge

The whole transaction had to move onto a platform in one pass — companion onboarding, discovery, booking, the session itself, settlement and dispute policy — launching on web and both mobile stores at the same time, with an economic model strong enough to pull companions away from fee-free chat-group dealing.

  • Supply had to be worth switching for — companions were already earning in chat groups with nobody taking a cut
  • Buyers and companions often do not share a first language, so the session itself had to bridge it
  • Three surfaces had to launch together: web, iOS and Android
  • Money moves between strangers, so verification, settlement and refund had to be policy-backed rather than ad hoc
  • App-store distribution carries its own requirements, including published child-safety standards
How Undertide responded
Decision 01

Zero fee on the order, revenue on the gift

Companions keep 100% of order value — the platform takes nothing from a standard session. Revenue comes from virtual gifting instead, where a 20% platform share applies. Supply-side acquisition and monetisation are deliberately separated: the thing a companion compares against a chat group costs them nothing, and the platform earns where spending is discretionary rather than contractual.

Decision 02

The session, not just the booking

Most marketplaces stop at introductions and let the work happen elsewhere. Here the engagement stays in-app: messaging, voice calls, and AI translation running inside the conversation. That keeps a cross-language session workable without either side moving to another platform — and it keeps reviews, disputes and history attached to a real record.

Decision 03

One credit ledger, many rails

Buyers top up in-app credit through Visa and Mastercard, FPX, GrabPay, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Each session draws that credit down and allocates service volume to the companion, so pricing, refunds, coupons and payouts all resolve against one ledger rather than against whichever payment method was used.

Decision 04

Three surfaces, one console

The web application and the iOS and Android apps run over one shared backend, and an operator console sits behind all three: companion verification, order and refund handling, coupon campaigns, and credit management. Booking, payment, refund and child-safety policies are published as first-class pages, not buried in terms.

Under the hood

A React single-page web application with native iOS and Android apps over one shared backend and database, plus an operator console for verification, orders, refunds, coupons and credit. Discovery, booking, in-app voice with AI translation, gifting and leaderboards all resolve against the same credit ledger.
